Anonymous has just confirmed that they have taken down CBS.com.
They have officially tweeted about it in their customary fashion: “http://cbs.com/ is TANGO DOWN!!!”
People visiting CBS.com are now seeing an index page with one file (foundry.html). Anonymous has taken a different approach to this hack. Rather than resorting to using DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks or XSS/SQL exploits, it looks like they’ve managed to gain access to the web root of the file servers and wipe them clean. For those trying to access popular sub-sites such as the How I Met Your Mother or The Big Bang Theory pages, visitors will get a 404 Not Found error which is indicative of an empty directory.
This comes just a few days after Anonymous took full responsibility for taking down many government websites, after popular file sharing locker MegaUpload was shut down by feds from the Unites States and New Zealand on charges of copyright infringement (among a long list of others).
CBS is owned by Viacom, which is owned by National Amusements, another media conglomerate in support of the proposed SOPA/PIPA bills. (thanks Sam)
*Update – 12:51PM EST* – All sites have been restored (took them long enough). We’re now waiting for an official statement or tweet from CBS about the situation.
Here’s what we saw earlier today (via imagebin)
